Can anyone learn to become a reader?

It all depends on what kind of a reader you want to be. If you want to learn to read cards, tea leaves or palms, no psychic skills are necessary. They are essential, however, if you want to become a psychic reader (a psychometrist, for example) or a clairvoyant. We often do not distinguish between these categories.

There are books available from which anyone can learn to read tarot cards, playing cards, palms or even tea leaves. Because the cards and the teacup are handled by the client, his psyche will influence the way the cards fall on the table or the shapes are formed by the tea leaves in the cup. The distribution of lines in the palm of a hand is also determined by the psyche. With practice, we can learn to interpret these signs.

To become a psychometrist or a clairvoyant, we have to develop psychic skills. Psychometrists use touch to pick up impressions from an object, while clairvoyants perceive through psychic means alone. Although people who have these psychic capabilities are considered by many to be gifted, both psychometry and clairvoyance can be learned, just like any other skill. As with other skills, though, not everyone has an aptitude for them and even those who do must practise a great deal. While we can learn to read cards or tea leaves on our own, learning psychometry requires the cooperation of other people. They must allow you to practise on their rings and wristwatches and then tell you how accurate you were in your reading. In the process, they will probably have to reveal personal information about themselves.

To get back to the question: yes, we can learn to become readers. But it’s important to ask what our purpose is in wanting to learn. Often, people who are troubled have a desire to help others. The ‘caretaker’ is primarily interested in satisfying his own need, although he may not be aware of it. In fact, he may unintentionally do more harm than good by giving a reading. Within the psychic realm there is a very fine line between reality and fantasy and, if the reader’s desire to help is based on a need for approval or gratification, he is more likely to cross that line. In some cases, the reading may become a reflection of that need. This could be dangerous for the client, particularly if she looks to the reader for advice.

Psychic skills are not playthings. The psychic has to take responsibility for his reading and for its impact on the client. It is irresponsible for a psychic reader to place the onus on cards, tea leaves or any spiritual help he may receive.

One of the roots of spirituality is the acceptance of What Is, which means choosing to not be unhappy.
