How do psychiatric drugs affect a person's psyche.

Psychiatric drugs alter brain chemistry. They work by altering the brain's functioning so that certain parts of a person's ego system become less accessible and, thereby, less problematic. Drugs cannot however change a person's ego system which is the basis of his identity or psyche and the result of all his experiences and learning. Some psychiatric symptoms are the result of physiological imbalances or disturbances in the brain. If this is the case, then a drug may restore normal functioning.
