Do we have to follow a spiritual path in order to lead a spiritual life?

Many of us have been taught spiritual values, but frequently fail to apply them. We go to church and park our car in the space reserved for the disabled, or we pray on Sunday and curse our neighbour on Monday.

For some people, the path through life is naturally one of teaching, sharing and building, like the plumber who enjoys his craft. He takes great satisfaction in handling each piece of pipe, welding or threading each fitting in place, and positioning each valve where it is required. He is glad to be a builder and of service. If he also shares his children’s joys and disappointments, nurturing and building their egos, he is truly leading a spiritual life.

Although it is often said that animals exhibit human qualities, it is we who have inherited their qualities.
