Why does stroking my baby help to calm her?

It is well known that babies quickly stop crying when their mother strokes them, but why does it work? It may sometimes be the case that the baby enjoys his mother’s attention and stops crying. But other things are happening as well. The mother is having loving thoughts about her crying infant as she strokes his body. Her focus on comforting her baby causes a buildup of energy around her hand. Her hand thus becomes an instrument of her psyche, capable of manipulating the baby’s energy field and settling its disturbance. It doesn’t seem to matter whether whether the baby’s energy were disturbed by his crying or whether his crying was caused by the disturbance; as the energies are manipulated they relax, and the baby comes to feel at ease.

There may be another explanation for what is happening when the mother strokes her baby. Suppose that the baby is short of energy for some reason. Perhaps he hasn’t been sleeping well and has been crying a lot, or he has used up a lot of energy digesting his food. Whatever the case, the lack of energy causes him to feel uncomfortable.  As his mother strokes him, her energy automatically flows through her hand and into his body. This causes the baby’s energy level to build up again and he begins to feel comfortable.

Whichever of these two explanations best describes what is happening between the mother and her infant, in neither case does the mother actually heal the infant. What occurs is merely a manipulation or transfer of energy.
